Inspection plate Guarantee Act
For over 600 years, precious metal objects have been tested for their precious metal content. This makes it the oldest form of consumer protection known in the Netherlands. The hallmark, stamped by an assay office, guarantees the platinum, gold, silver, or palladium content of your jewelry or utensil.
Jewelry or utensils made of silver (from 8 grams), gold (from 1 gram), or platinum (from 0.5 grams) purchased in the Netherlands must bear a Dutch-recognized hallmark. Items under this weight are exempt from the hallmark. Palladium items can be voluntarily hallmarked as of 2010. Large items are also hallmarked with an office mark and date letter. The office mark indicates where the item was hallmarked, while the date letter indicates when the item was hallmarked.
